Push-to-talk dictation for macOS

Hold a key. Talk.
It’s typed.

Skrim turns what you say into clean, well-formed text, right at your cursor, in any app. Bring your own API key. No account, no subscription, no server in between.

What you say

Press and hold the key (or your real Right Option key), then let go. It’s a simulation: nothing is recorded.

How it works

Three moves, no menus.

  1. 1

    Hold

Hold Right Option ⌥ (or the key you choose). A small pill appears above the Dock.

  2. 2

    Talk

Say it like you’d say it. Skrim transcribes while you speak, so there’s little left to wait for.

  3. 3

    Let go

The cleaned-up text lands at your cursor. No text field? It goes to the clipboard, ready for ⌘V.

Double-tap the key to lock recording on and talk hands-free. Esc cancels. Pressing another key while holding cancels too, so your ⌥ shortcuts keep working.

What it does

Sounds like you,
reads like writing.

Matches the app

Email gets a proper email. Work chat stays crisp, personal chat stays casual, AI prompts stay plain. In a browser, Gmail counts as email and ChatGPT as a prompt.

Cleans up as it goes

Drops the “um”s, applies your corrections (“three, no, four apples” → “four apples”) and turns spoken lists into real ones. Pick none, light or medium.

Meeting notes

A live transcript that tells You apart from Them, next to your own notes. One click turns it into a summary with decisions and action items.

Transforms

Select any text, press ⌃⌥T, and rewrite it: polish it, make it friendlier, turn it into a proper AI prompt. Or write your own.

Snippets

Say a short cue, get the long thing: your address, a booking link, a sign-off you type ten times a day.

Insights & history

Your streak, words spoken and time saved at your typing speed. Every transcript is kept on your Mac, so a missed paste is never lost.

Your key, your provider

Nothing goes
through us.

There is no Skrim server and no Skrim account. Audio goes straight from your Mac to the provider you pick, and the recording is deleted as soon as it’s transcribed, unless you choose to keep it.

  • Groq for speed: about half a second from release to text.
  • OpenAI, or any OpenAI-compatible transcription endpoint, including one you run yourself.
  • Your API key lives in the macOS Keychain.
  • History, notes, snippets and stats are stored only on your Mac.
  • You pay your provider for what you use. Skrim itself is free.

Get Skrim

Almost ready
to talk.

  1. Get Skrim from the Mac App Store.
  2. Allow Microphone and Accessibility. Accessibility lets Skrim notice the hotkey in other apps and paste the text.
  3. Paste an API key in Settings: Groq or OpenAI.
  4. Hold Right Option ⌥, speak, release.

Good to know

Small print,
in plain words.

What does it cost?

Skrim is free. Transcription and cleanup are billed by your provider per use, usually a small fraction of a cent per dictation.

Does it work in every app?

Anywhere you can type. Skrim pastes at your cursor and puts your clipboard back afterward. If there’s no text field, the text waits on the clipboard; Copy Last Transcript in the menu bar is always there too.

Can I use the Fn / Globe key?

Yes. Set System Settings → Keyboard → Press 🌐 key to to Do Nothing so macOS doesn’t open the emoji picker at the same time.

What do meeting notes need?

Screen & System Audio Recording permission, to hear the call. Without it Skrim records your mic only. Use headphones, or the mic picks up the call as well.
